Arrival was inspired by the successful return of migrating monarch butterflies to their overwintering sites. An essential stop on this journey is finding their host plant, native milkweed, as it is the only plant young monarch caterpillars can eat. Females lay hundreds of eggs and tend to lay about one egg per plant because young monarch caterpillars have the appetite to eat an entire plant before metamorphosing into a butterfly. The western and eastern monarch numbers are in decline for various reasons, most notably because of the loss of native milkweed habitat. This 19th century woman is providing sustenance with her bonnet full of native milkweed flowers to help ensure the survival of the next generation of monarch butterflies.
